My First Summer Vacation

I was twelve years old when I went on my very first summer vacation. Little did I know at that time this vacation is the reason why I love to travel today. I don’t care if it’s a two hour trip or a ten hour trip I love to travel.

It was the last week of June. My oldest Brother Billy and his family came home to visit for awhile. They lived in San Diego, California. The visit home with family was great we all enjoyed it. When it was time for them to leave and at the last minute I decided I wanted to go.  Now picture this, I have allegies right and my face is swollen up bad, my eyes are almost closed shut but believe me I got in that van. Nothing was gonna stop me from going on this trip. After I ask my Mom and Dad of course. A trip to California takes 3-4 days from Kentucky. It all depends on how you drive.

Earlier Billy had told me we were going to stay in Arkansas for a week. That’s where his wife is from. It was 4th of  July week. I have never been to Arkansas before so I was excited. The ride there was nice and we all were happy when we arrived at our destination. That was a great week because we celebrated  4th of July.  I’m more happy though because it was time for our trip to California.

Finally we were on our way. The trip there was long but I enjoyed it. We went through many States Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. I was so excited seeing all these different states and people I hadn’t seen before. I even saw Native American’s. When we got to California oh what a great feeling I had. As we traveled through the many cities seeing a lot of water and the tall buildings and alot of traffic also alot of people. I didn’t know what to think. I haven’t seen anything  like this before. We finally arrived at home and we were all glad and tired.

Some of the things I enjoyed while I was there were trying different cultural foods Japanese, Philippino, Chinese and many others. Some of the foods I liked some I didn’t. Billy took me to the Navy Base where he worked and introduced me to some of his crew. He was in the Navy for twenty-two years. I saw trees with oranges on them I have never saw anything like that before plus I love oranges. The cookouts and visiting my brothers’ friends I also enjoyed. The best day for me was the Saturday we went to Disney Land. We had so much fun walking through the park, riding roller coasters, and eating, that was a good day. It was the first time I had been to an amusement park. We would also walk to the Bay it was so nice seeing the water.

When it was time for me to leave I didn’t want to go. Billy told me I could stay. I never asked my parents because I knew they wouldn’t let me. So I got on the airplane and went home.

If you ever get a chance to visit California go to San Diego its a beautiful place.

  1. The power of positive experiences right? I can’t even remember my first holidays or summer vacation but I do love to travel today! A bit of anxiety going on but still I love travelling!

  2. I was similarly aged when I first visited California too! San Diego is such a lovely place. I love taking my kids to different places so they can see HOW BIG this world really is!

  3. “I don’t care if it’s a two hour trip or a ten hour trip I love to travel.” AMEN! I’ve been to California once before but as a child on a short stay who didn’t really know then how to relish a travel experience. Hope to visit again one day soon and really experience it!

  4. It’s a beautiful post. I can remember my childhood and my first summer vacation. I used to go to my aunt’s house to stay for a week. After a week, my dad used to come to pick me up. I would hide myself in another room and then ask him to come after a week to pick me up.

  5. I have never been to the area but it is on my list for one day! Traveling provides you with a different education that cannot be found in school. It is so great that you got started so early!

  6. I’ve always wanted to travel to California, but living in Kansas, it’s hard to go anywhere outside the surrounding few states. It sounds like it was an amazing trip though!
